The short version
Capture uses the camera, with your permission, for real-board capture. The board reader, chess engine, and saved games stay on your device. It does not use ads, tracking, or cloud saves.
Who runs this
This app and this site are operated by Eat Chess Games ("we", "us"). If you have any privacy questions, email hello@eatchess.com.
Camera use
Capture asks for camera permission only when you start real-board capture. On-screen play does not use the camera at all. When the camera is active:
- The video stream is read on your device by the board reader.
- The app does not send, upload, or share the camera feed or any frames from it.
- The app does not save photos to your camera roll by itself. You may export a final PGN or screenshot from the share menu. It only sends content if you choose where to send it.
- You can revoke camera permission at any time in your device settings. Modes that need the camera will prompt you again the next time you start them.
Data the app keeps locally
- Your saved games: real-board sessions and on-screen games, stored as standard chess data on your device.
- Board review state and correction history for captured games.
- Settings, such as computer player choice, Nib slider position, and vibration.
Data the app does not require
- No Eat Chess sign-in.
- No ads or tracking tools.
- No cloud game list or online play.
- No location, contacts, microphone, or photo library access.
- No outside chess engine. The built-in computer players run on your device.
Purchases
The planned first release is free, with no ads, subscriptions, or paid extras.
App stores and your device
When Capture launches, it will be distributed through the usual app stores. Apple, Google, and your device may collect install, crash, and basic use reports while running their stores and devices. Their own privacy policies cover that data. If you choose to share crash reports with developers, the store may send us reports. We use those only to fix bugs.
Children
Capture is appropriate for chess players of any age. The app does not collect personal information from anyone, child or adult. Because of that, we do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. Because the app uses the camera, parents should help younger players understand when and why the camera is active.
Removing local data
The app stores your games on your device only. Removing the app removes real-board sessions, on-screen games, and settings. The game list also lets you delete one game at a time.
